How can you guys afford this trip?
Honest answer, we can’t. Fortunately, we are not cruising on savings but rather income. Living aboard our Ranger 28 for us, is not an adventure but rather a lifestyle. So, in order to make it a sustainable and long term plan, we are constantly looking for creative ways to make and save money. When we started, we were web developers. As time progressed I deviated some of my time to take care of the blog and make it profitable and Jax continued to do web development as well as some blogging. In the future we hope to keep exploring our passions for photography, film and journalism and make a living out of that. But for now, we are just cautious with our spending and are always on the look out to find creative ways for making some extra money.

How did you choose your boat?
Well, we didn’t choose it, but we are happy with it. If you read back to the beginning of our story, you’ll learn that the way we ended up with this boat was almost by chance. A client of Jaxon’s uncle had a couple too many boats and did not mind parting with this Ranger 28 for very little money. So, we did not choose Surkha, she kind of chose us and we love her. You can visit our Ranger 28 page to learn more about Surkha and this Gary Mull design.
What are your plans once you get to the Caribbean?
We do not know yet. We will probably try to sail around the world, but it will all depend on how we feel at the moment. We like to take adventures one at a time, so that we can enjoy each moment as if it were our last. So, once we get to the Caribbean, we’ll probably sail around visiting as many islands as we can, learning from the different cultures and locations, visit family in Dominican Republic and take it from there. Caye, is from Ecuador, so we’ll at least try to make it that far with the boat and from there it is only a hop to the Galapagos and then Australia and then… well, will see!
Why did you decide to do this?
Well, there are several answers. I’ll start by saying that Jax and I have always enjoyed traveling, but were always surprised that we would often be homesick when visiting places. So, we decided that the best way to travel would be to take our home with us, hence making it sustainable to travel “forever”. We also did not like being tourists while in a new place, Jax and I enjoy being active members of communities, get to know the people and learn from them. We hope that bringing our home into a coastal community and being able to stay for while will grant us some of these benefits. Our passion for sailing came after our desire to travel. Jax always liked to sailing, I was ambivalent about it, but now we are both enjoying this lifestyle to the fullest.
Do you always get along?
Couple life is not always easy – it doesn’t matter where you are. Imagine the trials of a relationship combined with poor electricity, lack of running water, no door between bathroom and bedroom, life threatening storms, you get the picture. It is not always easy, but it has made our relationship stronger. We have had to learn how to really communicate, our deep breathing and patience have been exercised and we have exchanged theoretical shoes plenty of times. However, for every trying moment, there are hundreds of great shared memories and even if it sounds pretty corny, We would never change a day we have spent next to each other for anything.

How old are you guys?
Caye is 23 and Jax is 26.
Is this the end of your sailing?
Nop, we absolutely love sailing. We will be in land for about two years getting our stuff together, that means putting some money in the bank and starting some sort of project that will take us around the world. Yes we know, we now have two dogs, this complicates things a little but we will find a way. Lots of dogs live aboard and ours will only be two years old, which is a prime time for training them. There are a lot of things that we still have to figure out, but we will for sure continue sailing and traveling. How can you guys afford this trip?
